Henry and Marie's family

Marie Euphemia Aquart Ferguson arrived in Japan via Hong Kong aboard the British steamer Behar on 19 May 1874 and was married to Henry Dyer on 23 May in the British Legation in Yokohama in the presence of the British Minister to Japan Sir Harry Smith Parkes. The marriage ceremony was conducted according to the rights of the Church of England by Rev William W Parry of HMS Iron Duke.

The following notice appeared in The Glasgow Herald of 9 June 1874

At the British Legation, Yokohama, Japan, on 23 ult. by the Rev William Parry and in the presence of Sir Harry Parkes, Her Majesty's Minister, Henry Dyer CE, Principal of the Imperial College of Engineering, Yeddo, to Marie, daughter of Duncan Ferguson, 8 Havelock Terrace, Paisley Road, Glasgow.

Marie (photo on right) was the eldest of a family of eight children. Her father was born in Perthshire and her mother in Glasgow. The family had lived in St Lucia (where Marie and one of her sisters were born) and in Birmingham before settling in Glasgow. Marie's father, Duncan Ferguson was a Goldsmith or Master Jeweller.

Henry and Marie had five children the eldest of whom died in infancy. All five were born in Japan. None of them had any descendants.

John Ferguson Dyer died in infancy. His death was reported in the Japan Weekly Mail on 27 November 1875.

Charles Henry Dyer

was educated at the University of Glasgow and at Edinburgh Theological College. He became an Anglican clergyman and lived and worked latterly in Cambridge. He was married twice and had no children (Crockford's Clerical Directory 1948).

Robert Morton Dyer

was educated at The Royal Technical College in Glasgow and at the University of Glasgow. He became a Naval Architect and worked in shipbuilding in Glasgow and Hong Kong. His last known address was in Westmoreland. He married Alice Lowden. They had no children. (Who was Who 1929-1940).

James Ferguson Dyer

was educated at the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford. He joined the Indian Civil Service and his last known address was in Nairn. He married Edna Ketchen. They had no children (Who was Who 1929-1940).

Marie Ferguson Dyer did not marry and lived latterly in Edinburgh. She donated her father's art collection to the Edinburgh City Library.
